The Buna/Bojana Transboundary Integrated Management Plan

This pilot activity aims to integrate sustainable management practices of coastal areas, river basins and coastal aquifers into a single management plan for the Buna/Bojana River area. Buna/Bojana River is shared between Albania (Buna) and Montenegro (Bojana).

An integrated management plan for the Buna/Bojana transboundary basin is being prepared by PAP/RAC, GWP‐Med and UNESCO‐IHP in coordination with the Albanian and Montenegrin ministries competent for environment, coastal zone and water resources management. Two teams of national experts, one in each country, have been established to collect and analyze necessary information and data.

The aim is to integrate sustainable management practices of coastal areas, river basin and coastal aquifers into a single management plan for the Buna/Bojana River area.

The pilot activity is the first effort to test and demonstrate the implementation of a new Integrative Methodological Framework (IMF) for the management of coastal areas and river basins, including the coastal aquifers.

The project intends to support the efforts made by the two governments (Albania and Montenegro) to improve the management of the hydrological system and the reduction of flood risks in the Buna/Bojana (Albania/Montenegro) adjacent areas.

Most importantly the activity will provide Albania and Montenegro with an instrument to be used towards the sustainable management of the area, in line with the ICZM Protocol and the EU WFD.

The preparation of the management plan is a pilot activity under the GEF supported Strategic Partnership for the Mediterranean Sea Large Marine Ecosystem Component 1 “Integrated approaches for the implementation of the SAPs and NAPs: ICZM, IWRM and management of coastal aquifers”.

It is part of and supported by activities carried out under the Mediterranean Component of the EU Water Initiative (MED EUWI).

The Final Consultation Meeting for the Presentation of the Buna/Bojana Transboundary Integrated Management Plan was organized in Ulcinj, Montenegro, on 7 September 2015. Find out more...
